thesisThis thesis deals with the procedures and considerations of High Resolution X-ray Micro Tomography (HRXMT) to describe the internal structure and composition of multiphase mineral particles using XRadia's Micro XCT 400. Issues such as sampling statistics, sample preparation, scan conditions adjustment, image evaluation, and data analysis are considered. Mineral characterization using Computed Tomography (CT) standards is also discussed with the procedure of making a CT standard and comparison of HRXMT results and automated analysis of polished sections (QEMSCAN) results. In order to record and establish scan conditions, a database is provided. The use of XMuDat is discussed step by step for the user to easily evaluate the mass attenuation coefficient relationship of a mineral sample. The operating procedures of the XRadia Micro XCT 400 system are also set for a new user to be able to understand and operate the system for a sample scan. Several applications using HRXMT are also discussed. First, a few oil shale samples have been investigated to acquire high resolution internal structure images. Second, the methodology for rapid radiographic scans to identify heavy metal mineral rich regions in low grade ores is developed as an initial attempt to effectively link mine to mill. Finally, scans and analysis of teeth are presented to define internal structures in three dimensional images using CT Standards
The Taiwan ECDFS Near-Infrared Survey: Ultra-deep J and Ks Imaging in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South
We present ultra-deep J and Ks imaging observations covering a 30' * 30' area
of the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (ECDFS) carried out by our Taiwan
ECDFS Near-Infrared Survey (TENIS). The median 5-sigma limiting magnitudes for
all detected objects in the ECDFS reach 24.5 and 23.9 mag (AB) for J and Ks,
respectively. In the inner 400 arcmin^2 region where the sensitivity is more
uniform, objects as faint as 25.6 and 25.0 mag are detected at 5-sigma. So this
is by far the deepest J and Ks datasets available for the ECDFS. To combine the
TENIS with the Spitzer IRAC data for obtaining better spectral energy
distributions of high-redshift objects, we developed a novel deconvolution
technique (IRACLEAN) to accurately estimate the IRAC fluxes. IRACLEAN can
minimize the effect of blending in the IRAC images caused by the large
point-spread functions and reduce the confusion noise. We applied IRACLEAN to
the images from the Spitzer IRAC/MUSYC Public Legacy in the ECDFS survey
(SIMPLE) and generated a J+Ks selected multi-wavelength catalog including the
photometry of both the TENIS near-infrared and the SIMPLE IRAC data. We

Regulation of CLC-1 chloride channel biosynthesis by FKBP8 and Hsp90β.
Mutations in human CLC-1 chloride channel are associated with the skeletal muscle disorder myotonia congenita. The disease-causing mutant A531V manifests enhanced proteasomal degradation of CLC-1. We recently found that CLC-1 degradation is mediated by cullin 4 ubiquitin ligase complex. It is currently unclear how quality control and protein degradation systems coordinate with each other to process the biosynthesis of CLC-1. Herein we aim to ascertain the molecular nature of the protein quality control system for CLC-1. We identified three CLC-1-interacting proteins that are well-known heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90)-associated co-chaperones: FK506-binding protein 8 (FKBP8), activator of Hsp90 ATPase homolog 1 (Aha1), and Hsp70/Hsp90 organizing protein (HOP). These co-chaperones promote both the protein level and the functional expression of CLC-1 wild-type and A531V mutant. CLC-1 biosynthesis is also facilitated by the molecular chaperones Hsc70 and Hsp90β. The protein stability of CLC-1 is notably increased by FKBP8 and the Hsp90β inhibitor 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG) that substantially suppresses cullin 4 expression. We further confirmed that cullin 4 may interact with Hsp90β and FKBP8. Our data are consistent with the idea that FKBP8 and Hsp90β play an essential role in the late phase of CLC-1 quality control by dynamically coordinating protein folding and degradation
Antidepressant-Like Activity of the Ethanolic Extract from Uncaria lanosa Wallich var. appendiculata Ridsd in the Forced Swimming Test and in the Tail Suspension Test in Mice
This study investigated the antidepressant activity of ethanolic extract of U. lanosa Wallich var. appendiculata Ridsd (ULEtOH) for two-weeks administrations by using FST and TST on mice. In order to understand the probable mechanism of antidepressant-like activity of ULEtOH in FST and TST, the researchers measured the levels of monoamines and monoamine oxidase activities in mice brain, and combined the antidepressant drugs (fluoxetine, imipramine, maprotiline, clorgyline, bupropion and ketanserin). Lastly, the researchers analyzed the content of RHY in the ULEtOH. The results showed that ULEtOH exhibited antidepressant-like activity in FST and TST in mice. ULEtOH increased the levels of 5-HT and 5-HIAA in cortex, striatum, hippocampus, and hypothalamus, the levels of NE and MHPG in cortex and hippocampus, the level of NE in striatum, and the level of DOPAC in striatum. Two-week injection of IMI, CLO, FLU and KET enhanced the antidepressant-like activity of ULEtOH. ULEtOH inhibited the activity of MAO-A. The amount of RHY in ULEtOH was 17.12 mg/g extract. Our findings support the view that ULEtOH exerts antidepressant-like activity. The antidepressant-like mechanism of ULEtOH may be related to the increase in monoamines levels in the hippocampus, cortex, striatum, and hypothalamus of mice
A Wide and Deep Exploration of Radio Galaxies with Subaru HSC (WERGS). II. Physical Properties derived from the SED Fitting with Optical, Infrared, and Radio Data
We present physical properties of radio galaxies (RGs) with 1 mJy discovered by Subaru Hyper Supreme-Cam (HSC) and VLA Faint Images of
the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey. For 1056 FIRST RGs at with HSC counterparts in about 100 deg, we compiled
multi-wavelength data of optical, near-infrared (IR), mid-IR, far-IR, and radio
(150 MHz). We derived their color excess (), stellar mass, star
formation rate (SFR), IR luminosity, the ratio of IR and radio luminosity
(), and radio spectral index () that are
derived from the SED fitting with CIGALE. We also estimated Eddington ratio
based on stellar mass and integration of the best-fit SEDs of AGN component. We
found that , SFR, and IR luminosity clearly depend on redshift
while stellar mass, , and do not significantly
depend on redshift. Since optically-faint () RGs that are
newly discovered by our RG survey tend to be high redshift, they tend to not
only have a large dust extinction and low stellar mass but also have high SFR
and AGN luminosity, high IR luminosity, and high Eddington ratio compared to
optically-bright ones. The physical properties of a fraction of RGs in our
sample seem to differ from a classical view of RGs with massive stellar mass,
low SFR, and low Eddington ratio, demonstrating that our RG survey with HSC and

Multiplex PCR System for Rapid Detection of Pathogens in Patients with Presumed Sepsis – A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis
Background: Blood culture is viewed as the golden standard for the diagnosis of sepsis but suffers from low sensitivity and long turnaround time. LightCycler SeptiFast (LC-SF) is a real-time multiplex polymerase chain reaction test able to detect 25 common pathogens responsible for bloodstream infections within hours. We aim to assess the accuracy of LC-SF by systematically reviewing the published studies. Method Related literature on Medline, Embase, and Cochrane databases was searched up to October 2012 for studies utilizing LC-SF to diagnose suspected sepsis and that provided sufficient data to construct two-by-two tables. Results: A total of 34 studies enrolling 6012 patients of suspected sepsis were included. The overall sensitivity and specificity for LC-SF to detect bacteremia or fungemia was 0·75 (95% CI: 0·65–0·83) and 0·92 (95%CI:0·90–0·95), respectively. LC-SF had a high positive likelihood ratio (10·10) and a moderate negative likelihood ratio (0·27). Specifically, LC-SF had a sensitivity of 0·80 (95%CI: 0·70–0·88) and a specificity of 0·95(95%CI: 0·93–0·97) for the bacteremia outcome, and a sensitivity of 0·61 (95%CI: 0·48–0·72) and a specificity of 0·99 (95%CI: 0·99–0·99) for the fungemia outcome. High heterogeneity was found in the bacteremia outcome subgroup but not in the fungemia outcome subgroup. Conclusion: LC-SF is of high rule-in value for early detection of septic patients. In a population with low pretest probability, LC-SF test can still provide valuable information for ruling out bacteremia or fungemia
Assessing the Decision-Making Process in Human-Robot Collaboration Using a Lego-like EEG Headset
Human-robot collaboration (HRC) has become an emerging field, where the use of a robotic agent has been shifted from a supportive machine to a decision-making collaborator. A variety of factors can influence the effectiveness of decision-making processes during HRC, including the system-related (e.g., robot capability) and human-related (e.g., individual knowledgeability) factors. As a variety of contextual factors can significantly impact the human-robot decision-making process in collaborative contexts, the present study adopts a Lego-like EEG headset to collect and examine human brain activities and utilizes multiple questionnaires to evaluate participants’ cognitive perceptions toward the robot. A user study was conducted where two levels of robot capabilities (high vs. low) were manipulated to provide system recommendations. The participants were also identified into two groups based on their computational thinking (CT) ability. The EEG results revealed that different levels of CT abilities trigger different brainwaves, and the participants’ trust calibration of the robot also varies the resultant brain activities
Proteomic profiling reveals α1-antitrypsin, α1-microglobulin, and clusterin as preeclampsia-related serum proteins in pregnant women
AbstractObjectivePreeclampsia is a major cause of mortality in pregnant women but the underlying mechanism remains unclear to date. In this study, we attempted to identify candidate proteins that might be associated with preeclampsia in pregnant women by means of proteomics tools.Materials and methodsDifferentially expressed proteins in serum samples obtained from pregnant women with severe preeclampsia (n = 8) and control participants (n = 8) were identified using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) followed by peptide mass fingerprinting using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS). Additional serum samples from 50 normal and 41 pregnant women with severe preeclampsia were analyzed by immunoassay for validation.ResultsTen protein spots were found to be upregulated significantly in women with severe preeclampsia. These protein spots had the peptide mass fingerprints matched to α1-antitrypsin, α1-microglobulin, clusterin, and haptoglobin. Immunoassays in an independent series of serum samples showed that serum α1-antitrypsin, α1-microglobulin, and clusterin levels of severe preeclampsia patients (n = 41) were significantly higher than those in the normal participants (n = 50; α1-antitrypsin 295.95 ± 50.94 mg/dL vs. 259.31 ± 33.90 mg/dL, p = 0.02; α1-microglobulin 0.029 ± 0.004 mg/mL vs. 0.020 ± 0.004 mg/mL, p < 0.0001; clusterin 77.6 ± 16.15 μg/dL vs. 67.6 ± 15.87 μg/dL, p < 0.05).ConclusionIdentification of these proteins by proteomics analysis enables further understanding of the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Further studies are warranted to investigate the role of these biomarkers in prediction of this disease
